PAS ID Tags
Is there a pre-assembled package/system?
NO. It is our belief along with Clemens that no one product can
meet the needs of every department, therefore, all components of the
system are sold separately allowing you to
buy simply what is needed for
YOUR department’s own individual needs.
Should we use laminated or engraved tags?
This choice is entirely up to you. The advantage to using the
laminated tags is that you can supply each FF with a customized ID tag
complete with your dept information (patch, name & town), a photo ID (if
so desired) and vital Emergency Medical Information sealed inside
to be accessed by EMS personnel in the event of sudden illness or injury.
Using the Fire-Trax Print Software, your department can easily
create a database of its’ members and their vital information while having
the ability to design and print (through a standard PC & laser printer)
PAS tags complete with high capacity PDF417 bar codes (such as those found
on your driver’s license). This allows your department to be
compatible with other agencies already using the Fire-Trax automated PAS.
Plus, if your department chooses to eventually upgrade to the Fire-Trax
system, your members’ PAS Tags are already set up to be tracked using this
system!!
For a simpler approach or those looking for added durability, the engraved
PAS tags are the preferred choice. These simply list the members’ name and
department on two lines of engraved text.
How do we get our artwork on the laminated style PAS tags?
There are two ways to achieve this:
- The manufacturer can create the
artwork from your existing department
patch or stock logo (your dept. name/town are included) – a $25.00 printing fee is incurred EVERY time you order
tags, be it your original order or when ordering additional tags.
- Using the Fire-Trax Print
Software ($495.00), your department, using its’ own
standard PC and laser printer, can design and print custom PAS ID
Tags complete with the department logo, a digital photo (if desired),
the Emergency Medical Information and the high capacity PDF417 bar
codes (if desired).
What color tags should we use?
Simply use what works best for your department and its’ particular
needs. The PAS ID Tags are available in assorted colors including Red,
Green, Yellow, Blue, Orange, White, Purple, Light Grey (laminated style
only) or Black (engraved style only). This allows color coding of
stations, companies (engine/truck/rescue) or individual designations such
as interior/exterior FF, Probationary FF, Fire Police, EMS and specialty
teams (dive, RIT, technical rescue, etc.).
Looking for a simple way to identify interior/exterior FF’s & others on
the fireground? A popular, field proven means is the “traffic light
concept” which operates as follows:
Red PAS Tag – Exterior FF –
STOP at the door
Yellow PAS Tag – Probationary FF -
CAUTION, Inexperienced Member
Green PAS Tag – Interior FF -
GO through the point of entry
Don’t take in a large number of new members annually? Simply utilize 2
colors (i.e. red/green) to operate on a “you’re in or you’re out” concept.
Prefer orange tags for your “probies?” Yellow for SCBA qualified members?
NO PROBLEM – the system is designed by you to work for you!!
The traffic light system is merely an example of what many departments
using the Clemens PAS have utilized to meet their own unique needs. You
are NOT mandated to buy multiple colors - simply purchase
what meets your department’s own individual needs!!
How many tags should we issue?
This decision is based entirely on your manpower status. For smaller
departments (typically 20-30 members), a 1 tag system works well while
larger departments generally prefer a 2 tag “entry system” (1 PAS Tag to
vehicle collector ring, 1 PAS Tag to the point of entry). An
emerging trend among many departments is to provide an additional PAS Tag
without hardware to each FF which is then carried in the inside pocket of
the turn-out coat. This keeps the vital Emergency Medical Information readily accessible in the event of
sudden illness or injury thereby eliminating the need to retrieve the PAS
Tag from the accountability officer at the command post which can quite a
distance away.
A key point to bear in mind when considering the number of PAS Tags to
issue each member is your manpower availability. When utilizing a 2 tag
“entry system”, a designated person will be needed to act as the
accountability officer at the point of entry. While this position is
preferably filled by a command officer, it can be handled by other
personnel such as an exterior FF, EMS provider or fire police not actively
engaged in operations inside the “hot zone”.
Do we need the Fire-Trax Print Software?
The use of the Fire-Trax Print Software is not mandatory, however, it
is highly recommended. The use of Fire-Trax ultimately saves your
department money and more importantly time by allowing you to design and
print custom PAS ID Tags, eliminates the $25.00 printing fee EVERY time
you order additional tags, allows the creation of a database with members
vital information (no more hand typing) that can be easily updated
annually and allows for future upgrade to the Fire-Trax automated PAS.
How much hardware should we buy?
In addition to purchasing enough hardware as needed to outfit your
existing members, we recommend purchasing an additional 10-15 sets of
hardware (depending on your dept’s size) to keep as replacements. Should you
find the need for additional hardware, you can purchase the individual
components (nylon tie, ring & snap hook/thumb snap) at a later time with no
minimum quantity required.
Collection & Tracking
What information should we put on the Vehicle Collector Ring?
The typical configuration we supply the
Vehicle Collector Ring
ID tag with is an apparatus description (engine, ladder, etc.) and radio ID number
(line 1) with department name below (line 2). Example Engine1-2-3, Your Town F.D. If your department prefers a different set-up, this can be accommodated
at NO additional charge (please specify when ordering).
What do all the colors on the collection boards mean?
While the colors may seem confusing, they are actually a very simple
system to provide rapid identification of units operating on scene. The
color codes used on the Vehicle Collector Ring and collection/tracking
boards operate as follows:
Red – Engines, Tanker, Brush Truck, ARFF Vehicles
Green – Special Services – Ladder, Rescue, Specialty Units
Orange – E.M.S. – Ambulance, Paramedic Response Unit
Yellow – Safety – RIT/FAST Team, FF’s Responding in POV’s
Blue – Command – Chiefs, Coordinator, Outside Agencies (PD,
Utility)
Can we get custom colors on the collector rings & boards?
If you prefer to use different color codes to match those already in
use with your department or region, different colors can be supplied on
the collector ring ID tags at NO additional charge, however,
the collection/tracking boards cannot be changed. Please specify when
ordering if you prefer different colors.
How many collections boards/binders do we need?
As stated previously, purchase only what YOUR department
actually needs. The 1st Due PAS Board is well suited for command
vehicles and 1st due apparatus
(allows engineer/MPO/chauffeur to act as impromptu accountability officer
until arrival of chief officer) while the PAS Binder is designed for
large scale operations. Typically, most departments equip each chief’s car
with a 1st Due PAS Board while the command post vehicle is
supplied with a PAS Binder.
Logistical Issues
Some of our FF’s respond to the scene POV - how do we track them?
Several departments we have supplied addressed this issue by simply
ordering a Vehicle Collector Ring with a yellow unit ID tag (falls under the
Safety category) labeled “Personal Vehicle”. They then instituted an SOP
whereby any FF responding to the scene in their POV would report to the
command post for assignment and be partnered with other POV responding
FF’s to form a crew. Their PAS Tags were then attached to the yellow
collector ring and they are then tracked as a full crew performing
whatever task is assigned to them.
